Ford Mustang GT 4.6

The fourth-generation Mustang Ford not only referenced the original many years ago but also offered something more. And to think that this car was not originally intended for

The 4th-generation Mustang referred to the style that operated at the beginning of the American sports coupe
This model is an opportunity for drivers who dream of a real American car but do not want to spend a lot of money on it.
Anyone who has dreamed of a Mustang should be interested in the fourth generation, despite the fact that the car is not too valued by the most persistent fans of this model.
Ford without a Mustang? It’s like Bonnie without Clyde, Flip without Flip, or Bolek without Lolek. Meanwhile, in the history of the American model, there was a moment when they thought about stopping the production of this iconic car. Fortunately, this did not happen, or it would not have happened … this material. And Yes, many years later, we were able to ride the fourth-generation Mustang again, once again check its advantages and disadvantages, and, above all, find out what fun it brings while driving.

We go inside and immediately sink into the soft, slightly rough fabric on the seats, look at the thick steering wheel with an airbag and the same indicators as in the Ford Taurus. All this is a bit reminiscent of the glory days of these pony cars. At the same time, compared to the later Mustang of the 2000s, the car turned out to be a bit shy in terms of the style used.

In 1996, the car underwent an important modification. Although its handling did not change, the 5-liter V8 engine with the camshaft located in the center was abandoned. In its place was a more modern 4.6-liter unit. Its design made it easy to adapt to different models. Indeed, it was also used in other Ford models. The reason for replacing the engine was not the desire to achieve better performance, but they need to meet stricter exhaust emission standards. The new engine is not as sharp as the carburetor engine used in the predecessor. It generates 218 HP at 4,400 pm and is less interesting in terms of acoustics.

But Woe to the inexperienced driver, when the horse feels the oats. The rear of the vehicle quickly reacts to the strong pressure on the accelerator and only after a while can be controlled. Although this coupe tends to be explosive, it is still easy to master. Drift enthusiasts consider the fourth-generation Mustang to be the best rear-wheel-drive model of the decade. Acceleration from 0 to 96 km / h takes the car 6.6 seconds. The increase in speed is accompanied by the roar of a V8 engine that is as modern as it needs to be, and at the same time doesn’t completely break down from its origin.

This car also has a second, rather quiet character. We set the cruise control at 130 km / h and travel to the sun in a relaxed environment. It is good that there is also a radio on Board because the music drowns out the hard rear axle. After all, traveling with a fourth-generation Mustang is still harsh.

No less interesting than running is the story of this model, which warms the heart of every Mustang fan to red. Ford in Dearborn decided to end the Mustang era by the end of the ‘ 80s. The successor with the ST16 code was to be a small sports coupe, which was developed in collaboration with Mazda.

There is no doubt that all the money that the company will earn on this model will most likely not be received from loyal fans. Even if there was no such poor Chapter in the history of the Mustang, it is still known that Americans love pathos. An American legend using Japanese technology and front-wheel drive? Sounds like “Pony car-pearl Harbor”!

In the summer of 1987, Ford received 30,000 letters from outraged fans who spread rumors about the car … Mustang. As a result, the Mazda MX-6 derivative actually appeared as a different Ford (1989 model), but under a different name – the Probe.

Meanwhile, the Mustang’s story continued. In 1989, Alex Trotman, head of North American Ford, commissioned a small group of engineers (with a limited budget) to create the next generation of this model. The car was supposed to be from the original 1964 and could not have been worse than the car designed by Lee Iacocca.

The problem, however, is that times have changed, and the Mustang has already recognized competitors, and not just in the form of General Motors ‘ pony cars – the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. After all, there were rows of Toyota Celica or Dodge Diamonds in the Parking lots, which in Europe were better known as Mitsubishi Eclipse.

When designing, it turned out that it would be too expensive to start from scratch. This is why the platform and suspension from Ford Thunderbird were used in construction. It was decided to improve the old Fox platform, which received a new name “Fox-4”. In 1979, a car with a 200 HP engine went on sale. And he didn’t even mind that it premiered at a time of problems with OPEC and high fuel prices.

Lead designer Patrick Schiavone tried his best to get the job done, and in the design of the new Mustang, he used retro – style elements-there was a Bouncing chrome on the grille … a Mustang and he placed C-shaped air intakes on the side.

And to think that in the early ’90s, the Mustang should have disappeared from Ford’s stable. However, it turned out differently. The iconic model has stood the test of time and is moving on. Fortunately.
