Baby Benz is not as valued in Poland as its younger and older brother W124, but thanks to this you can become the owner of a young teenager for little money, who is suitable for everyday driving like no other.
Due to the size and only one version of the body, the Mercedes 190 is not as valued in Poland as the W124. However, from the point of view of the collector, the car has a huge, not fully disclosed potential – after all, this model took Mercedes in the 1980s to a completely different dimension and launched a new stylistic line from the brand of Stuttgart.
For this reason, diesel fuel appeared under the hood of the S-class W126 or even in the C123 coupe – because no one in their right mind expected that Americans would start driving cars with diesel engines also installed in luxury cars. Stricter standards are planned for 1985, so the fleet will spend an average of 8.3 l / 100 km. The atmosphere began to get nervous.
In addition, there were signals from American dealers that there was room in the local market for a small premium car designed for … Housewives will be used to transport children to school or to go shopping. Initially, the management of Mercedes could not tame the idea that next to luxury limousines in the offer will appear “such a car”, even considered cooperation with Lancia, Peugeot, or Honda. The management clearly had problems with this. It didn’t even help that in 1974, Zvezda engineers conducted an experiment that was supposed to show how small a car can be so that it retains all the characteristics of a Mercedes and is comfortable enough. For this purpose, the W115 was taken, the wheelbase and body were shortened. The car looked awkward, but it wasn’t about design. At the time, it was stated that the minimum length of the Mercedes was 4.4 m – exactly the same as 8 years later for the W201. If not for the work of technicians and the first basics of “190”, production, of course, would not have started in December 1982.
Mercedes ‘ production capabilities were also a problem – almost all factories were operating close to the upper limit of performance, and the new model would mean that one of the factories would have to be expanded (only Bremen was involved). In 1977, it became clear that a smaller car was needed, and an increase in the price of diesel fuel in 1979 solved the problem, although it was still considered creating a front-wheel-drive car that would be lighter and more economical. It was not easy to determine what the new Mercedes should look like. Initially, stylists shortened the W123 by trimming the front and rear overhang. The later model looked like a smaller W126, with identical body proportions. Stylist Andreas Langenbeck, who participated in the work, successfully summed them up: they were all just Mercedes. This other project is a coupe, where the main focus was on achieving the lowest possible aerodynamic drag. And it was this car that “unlocked” the stylists and became the right basis for the W201 – a car that looked out of this world against the background of the W126 (before the facelift) and the W123, but no one could say that it wasn’t a Mercedes. Of the chrome parts of the body, only the radiator grille remained – it turned out that the so-called RAID Grill, surrounded by the frame of the mask, was too early. The struggle with new technologies and safety standards against the background of previous difficulties already seems like child’s play. This was not quite the case, because the ” 190 ” first used high-quality steel, which improves the rigidity of the body structure, and such a complex multi-link rear suspension, which was already worked on for the W126 design., but then there was not enough time. The system consisting of 5 connecting rods driving the wheel, without changes also got into the W124, still remains one of the most convenient and provides stable driving. In addition, the engines in the W201 were completely new. Diesel engines have a modular design – 4-and 5-cylinder units have the same pistons and many other accessories. In addition, compared to the weaker diesel engines known from the W123, they were significantly lighter, and most importantly – more economical.
Car sales began in December 1982 and … the Mercedes managers were pale with fear. The model that costs more than the W123, despite the undeniable advantages of modern design, has not received recognition in the eyes of buyers. Due to low interest, dealers no longer had to allocate cars, as it was before when the new “star” appeared. There were no queues for “190”. This was partly due to poor engine power (only 2.0 petrol with 90 and 122 HP). The situation was saved only by diesel fuel with a capacity of 2.0 / 72 HP, which appeared in August 1983, and the subsequent increase in the supply of engines with powerful gasoline engines. Our model is equipped with the OM 602 d unit with a 25-5-cylinder engine, which debuted in 1985, and after the version with a facelift developed 94 HP. Contrary to appearances, this was not a very popular engine. This plant produced 147,502 W201 units, which, taking into account the total production volume (1.879 million), does not even give 10 percent. Share. The white crow among diesel is a turbocharged engine with a capacity of 2.5 / 122-126 HP since it was produced less than 21 thousand.
Today, the 190D 2.5 is a car that is great for everyday driving, if you can forgive the lack of air conditioning, because in “Baby Benz” it is very rare. The version with “automatic” overtaking on one-way roads also requires practice (some of the power is lost in the Converter box), but compared to the much more popular “2-liter” it’s not bad. In addition, the 2.5 interior is quieter than the 2.0, even at speeds above 130 km / h. In addition, the car clearly has disadvantages due to the age of the design (for example, not very precise steering or the inability to position the rear seat), but this should not be discussed – this type is what it is.
Mercedes 190D 2.5 pros and cons
The main advantage of the ” 190 ” is the ability to choose the car version depending on the needs (from economical diesel to strong gasoline) and the portfolio – from cars for several thousand zlotys to cars for 200,000 euros ( 2.5-16 Evo II). The undisputed minus is just one version of the body. The Mercedes 190 is gradually moving out of the used car category and into the classic category. Cars with a diesel under the hood have a large mileage – 400 thousand. km in German advertising is no exception. There are only 200,000 such vehicles left after crossing the border. The main problem with the W201 – as with most cars of this period-is corrosion. The most vulnerable points are places to insert the Jack into the sills (especially after the facelift version), the front fenders (the lower edge between the indicator and the wheel arch), the wheel arch shelves in the engine compartment, and the upper door frame (under the seal).

Consumables are available in a wide range at very different prices, depending on the quality. There are no serious problems with the mechanics (a large stock of used elements). You will get all the cufflinks and trinkets in the car dealership without problems, although since the W201 moved to the Classics Department, it has become much more expensive, and for a few cufflinks (for example, for installing headlights) you can pay more than 100 zlotys. Haberdashery and upholstery (such as door panels) are expensive.

Mercedes 190D 2.5 – in our opinion,
if the car should give pleasure to driving, then in the case of a 2.5 diesel engine, let the cars go for a few thousand zlotys – their price will not go anywhere, a waste of time. The goal should be “190 s” with “automatic” (which did not allow disrespect to the engine) – 12 000 – 16 000 zlotys. Especially valuable cars are the limited version of the 190 D 2.5 Avantgarde Verde of 1992 (green body), as only 750 units were produced.
