The new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon combines the most common off-road properties with the latest high-tech systems. Here are impressions of off-road trips in one of the most beautiful corners of the world – on the South Island of New Zealand.
The American off-road icon remains true to its original style times change, but not the appearance of a Wrangler.
The new Jeep Wrangler pleasantly surprises with high suspension comforts for the Germans, the archetype of the sports car remains the Porsche 911, so for the Americans, the Jeep Wrangler is an SUV model. And not just for them. Legend – probably no car fits as well as the Wrangler Rubicon. Even if today this legend has a start-stop system, an assistant for blind spots, and a magnesium back door. Why did he use them? Because it is possible And also because more often than after the picturesque wild nature, at the end of the world, it moves along the streets of our cities and on the highway. However, we prefer to drive it away from asphalt roads. Here, at the edge of the world, against the backdrop of the extraordinary nature of New Zealand, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon presents itself best.
Times change, but not the appearance of a Wrangler. Mike Allen, head of design at Jeep, explains this as follows: as soon as we announce the modernization of our icon, immediately there is a cry from loyal fans: “Don’t touch the style!» Then he adds with a grin: but we did it.
What has changed in appearance there are no surprises. The proportions did not change, only the grille was slightly bent forward, the bumpers have a more filigree shape, and the wheel arches have led strips available in the color of the car. Round headlights are also illuminated by LEDs. The mask has two air intakes. The windshield is tilted and larger. Just a few moves to put the glass on the hood and remove the door sashes-nods to father Willis. As our two-door Wrangler bravely makes its way through the streambed that flows out of the glacier, we listen to The jeep specialist responsible for the model.
We have completely upgraded the Wrangler, ” says John Mrozovsky. Like a real Roadster, it is still built on a frame made of strong, lightweight steel and aluminum. The door, hood, front window frame, and wheel arches are made of aluminum. This makes the Wrangler lighter and more durable than its predecessor. Although with a mass of 1894 kg, it consciously remains far from “light roadsters”. While modern urban SUVs rely on self-supporting bodies and often a single-wheel drive, the American off-road badge with 4×4 drive, gearbox, and differential locks is great for rough terrain.
And on the asphalt, the new Wrangler now moves with greater grace, including thanks to a 2-liter turbocharger with a capacity of 272 HP and 400 Nm, as well as an 8-speed “automatic”. With this engine produced by Alfa Romeo, the 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 produced in the US looks old school.
The days of mistreating travelers and reluctantly changing directions are gone forever. The new Jeep Wrangler pleasantly surprises with its high suspension comfort and obedient response to the orders of electro-hydraulic steering. And this is not the end of technical innovations in off-road classics. OnBoard was an Arsenal of devices to improve safety, as well as advanced systems that make driving, Parking easier, and making the journey more enjoyable. We are convinced that the followers of the offroad icon will withstand such a dose of modernity. And they will be ready in the middle of the year to go to the jeep salon to see the last batch of the car, the history of which began in 1942.
Jeep Wrangler – in our opinion
It doesn’t have to be New Zealand, you can also go to Bieszczady. The long process of modernizing the classic led to its relocation to the zone of modernity – the car received, among other things, electronic systems that increase comfort and safety. The off-road abilities, classic silhouette, and unique style of the legendary tough guy were preserved.
